Upcoming Concert: Seirm, Gaelic music

The next concert in our series is Seirm on March 21, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.

Member Mary Fears sings with this group.

Seirm, a 20-member ensemble of singers and instrumentalists, will perform at First Presbyterian on Sunday, March 21, at 2:00 p.m. The group performs both traditional and modern Scottish Gaelic music. Seirm was formed in November, 1996, in order to participate in Mòd Vancouver 1997. After only a few months of preparation, the fledgling choir brought home the Sons of Scotland shield for mixed choir. Seirm went on to compete in Mòd Vancouver 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and many of its members went on to win further acclaim.

After the Vancouver Mod Musical Association announced its intention to stop producing events in 2007, the group re-invented itself as something akin to a Big Gaelic Band. Seirm members now include instrumentalists, singers, and those brave souls who both sing and play! Scottish Gaelic music is the result of an oral tradition that began over 1000 years ago. The music is known for its beautiful melodies, intricate rhythms, doleful laments and rollicking reels.

Seirm’s unique presentation of traditional and modern tunes has been recognized by invitations to perform at the Pacific Northwest Folklife Festival and at highland games throughout Puget Sound.

Admission is by goodwill offering.

New Book on Everett First Presbyterian Church Released

ImageSteeple on the Hill

The Rev. Dr. Edwin C. Coon, Minister Emeritus of Everett, Washington, First Presbyterian Church, has ventured far from his roots in New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley. Like a modern-day Abraham, in answering God’s call to move forward into unknown territory, Ed has found himself wrestling with his own sense of selfworth, his ongoing faith, his challenging relationships with the people of the church, and even with his God. This book is Ed’s attempt to tell the story of First Presbyterian. However, in the process, he also tells his own.

Food Bank Sunday

ImageThe first Sunday of the month is our food bank Sunday.

Our tradition is to bring non-perishable foods to church on Communion Sunday for the food bank to share with those in need. Just place it in one of the baskets outside the sancturary or drop off anytime at the basket in the office...
